The Race by Richard North Patterson
This is the story of a Gulf War vet, Corey Grace, who won a Senate seat after the war and went on to run for President (sound familiar?). Corey is a free-thinking Republican (an oxymoron?) who doesn’t please many in his own party. He’s divorced and has recently gotten involved with a new woman…a black woman and Oscar-winning actress (a real no-no for a Republican). This, of course, doesn’t help his campaign. This story goes through the campaign…from before the primaries through the Republican convention…with all the nastiness, bargaining, dirty dealings, and lying that accompany any politician.
Even though this story is a bit too long, it’s a good story since the author delayed it’s release ‘til 2007, and reading it now (October 2008) is great! And I’m NOT a Republican.
