Bones to Ashes by Kathy Reichs
When Tempe Brennan and her sister were kids, they spent summers at their grandma’s on an island in SC. There were two other girls there, Evangeline and Obeline, and they all looked forward to spending their summers together. One summer, Evangeline and her sister were gone; Tempe’s letters to her were never answered. Years went by, Tempe went on with her life, but always wondered what happened to her long lost friend.
This story has Tempe working in Montreal. Ryan has several unidentified and missing young female cases. Another police colleague working cold cases has some old bones for her to identify. The pages are filled with forensic detail and Acadian history as Tempe goes about identifying all the bones. Of course, she wonders if any of them are Evangeline. In spite of the scientific details, the story moves along rather well and there’re a few surprises thrown in for interest…including Tempe’s love life.
