A Destiny of Fools by Ejner Fulsang

What sets this story apart from others is the time…it's 2085 AD, computers are sentient, and the world has been hit by the Great Sterility Pandemic that started in 2005. Sophie Zapata's generation is the next-to-last generation on earth; babies are a rarity. The story is an eerie look at what could happen in the next 70-80 years thanks to inept governments and failing infrastructures. It's a good adventure story, but also makes you really wonder what lies ahead for the next few generations. More:

Reminds me in a way, of China today. With their one child policy, now the burden to support the entire family-aging parents and grandparents-all falls on a single individual. Its a society teatering on the edge of collapse if the policy isn't changed soon.
