The Alibi Man by Tami Hoag

Elena Estes is a horse trainer in Florida. One morning while riding one of her charges, she finds a body in a canal. It’s her co-worker, Irina Markova. Elena quickly reverts to her days as a narcotics detective and can’t keep her nose out of the investigation. Having just broken up with Detective Landry, the scenes are not pretty. So who killed the fun-loving Irina? One of the wealthy old farts at the polo club she often entertained? Or could it be Bennett Walker, Elena’s fiancé twenty years ago?

There’s a fair amount of action and suspense to keep your interest. Elena is tough, bitter, and independent with a small bit of heart. Some scenes are a tad gruesome.
